Communicator App Overview

Communicator App Overview

The Relay Communicator App is the mobile app your team can use for everyday communication from an iPhone or Android device. It is designed for team members, managers, and administrators who need to stay connected without carrying an additional Relay device.

With the Communicator App, you can talk to your team using push-to-talk communication, send and receive messages, place calls, view recent message history, and access supported safety or incident features depending on your account’s service plan and permissions.

What you can do in the Communicator App

Depending on your Relay service plan and user permissions, the Communicator App may allow you to:

  • Talk to team channels using push-to-talk

  • Send and receive text messages in channels

  • Change channels

  • Place calls

  • View message history

  • Initiate or respond to panic alerts

  • Dispatch or participate in incidents

  • View location-related information, if enabled for your account

  • Send photos, if supported for your account

  • Set your availability so you can control when you receive communications

Getting started

To use the Communicator App:

  1. Download the Relay Communicator App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

  2. Open the app.

  3. Sign in using the same email and password you use for Relay Dashboard.

  4. Once signed in, you will land in the main communication area of the app.

If your company uses Single Sign-On, follow your organization’s login process.

Talking to a channel

The Communicator App works similarly to a Relay device. You can select the channel you want to communicate with, then use the talk button to send a voice message.

To talk to a channel:

  1. Open the Communicator App.

  2. Select the channel you want to speak to.

  3. Press and hold the microphone or talk button.

  4. Say your message.

  5. Release the button when you are finished.

The channel shown on your talk button is the channel that will receive your message.

Messaging and message history

The Communicator App allows you to stay connected through both voice and text. In supported channels or conversations, you can send and receive text messages in addition to voice communication.

You may also be able to review recent message history, including previous voice messages or transcriptions, depending on your account’s enabled features.

Calls

If calling is enabled for your account, you can place calls to other Relay users from the Communicator App. This can be helpful when you need to speak directly with one person instead of broadcasting to a full channel.

Availability

The Communicator App may include an availability setting that allows you to control whether you are available to receive communications. This helps you silence notifications or voice communication without needing to fully sign out of the app.

Accessing admin features

The Communicator App is focused on communication. Administrative and configuration tools are now handled in the separate Relay Admin App.

If you have admin permissions, you may see admin or configuration options under the More section of the Communicator App. When you select one of these options, you may be prompted to download or open the Relay Admin App.

Once both apps are installed, your login session is shared between the Communicator App and Relay Admin App, so you do not need to log in separately each time.

Who should use the Communicator App?

The Communicator App is best for:

  • Team members who communicate from a smartphone

  • Managers who need to stay connected while away from a Relay device

  • Off-site leaders who need visibility into team communication

  • Administrators who need to communicate with frontline teams while on the go

Notes

Available features may vary based on your organization’s Relay service plan, account configuration, and user permissions. If you do not see a feature described in this article, contact your Relay administrator or Customer Success Manager for more information.
